VLOOKUP is one of Excel’s most popular and useful functions. VLOOKUP allows us to look up a value in a table and return a value that corresponds to it.
VLOOKUP is an Excel function that retrieves information from a vertically organised table. The first column of the table passed into VLOOKUP table array must contain the lookup values. VLOOKUP allows for approximate and exact matching, as well as partial matches using wildcards (*?). For better understanding, let us look at few examples given below:
Syntax of Vlookup Function
The syntax of the Power function is as follows:
=VLOOKUP(lookup_value,table_array,col_index_num,[range_lookup])
- lookup value – the value we’re looking for; it could be text, a number, or a single cell reference.
- Table array – the range in which we’ll lookup our value and the result it corresponds to. Please note that the range must begin with the column containing the value
- Col index num – This is the number of the column from which the result should be returned? The number in table array should be relative to the first column in the selected range.
- [range lookup] –   0 (or FALSE), which means “Exact Match,” to get exact value. 1 stands for “approximate match,” to get nearest value.
In the above example, Lookup Value is cell D16 i.e. ID number 6463, table array is B3:E11, and the col index number is 2 because we want the result “NAME.” Our range lookup is “true or 0” because we need the name of the exact Id number.
