Borders and Gridlines in Microsoft Excel

In our blog today let’s talk about Borders and Gridlines. Starting with:

Gridlines in Excel

Do you have the assumption that if you print an Excel file, the gridlines will also appear in the final print?

Answer is NO, Gridlines are only present for your convenience and better viewing of the document while editing. So, you can quickly locate cell numbers and use them. Gridlines also help you to see the data inside the worksheet clearly.

If gridlines are disturbing to you or your workflow requires gridlines to not be shown, you can always turn them off.

They are just a visual identifier so that you have an approximation of the cell height, width and other characteristics which can be easily determined by turning on the gridlines.

To turn on/off the gridlines:

Go to the View Tab -> Under the Show section -> Check/Uncheck the Gridlines option to turn on/off the gridlines view.

Without the gridlines your worksheet will look like this

And with the gridlines, it looks something like this.

NOTE: It will not affect the print layout of your page.

Borders in Excel

As discussed in the earlier section we know that anyways gridlines will not appear in the final print of the worksheet.

To make them appear you need to explicitly define borders over tables and cells.

A border gives emphasis over the element it surrounds and it’s always a good idea to add borders over simple tables in your worksheet.

Also, if you want to print the documents with outlines such as borders to make them stand apart in paper, you have to apply borders.

Borders are a great personalization tool which can help you to differentiate data in a single worksheet.

How to apply borders in Excel?

  • Select the cells to apply border
  • Under the Home Tab, inside the Font Category click on this button’s drop-down list
  • You’ll see many options requiring you to choose from a variety of border options.

We’ll select the all borders option. Just click on your desired border option

  • Now you’ve applied border to your data

You can verify the above by going to the Print Preview (CTRL+P) of the Sheet.

You can see for yourself no gridlines are appearing in the Print Preview but the applied borders are present.
